Big Five
The Masai Mara National Reserve is the northern extension of Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem and the heart of Kenya's safari country. Its rolling grasslands, acacia-dotted plains and the Mara and Talek rivers support one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo and rhino.
Between July and October, vast herds of wildebeest and zebra cross from Tanzania and brave the crocodile-filled Mara River, one of the great wildlife spectacles on earth. Outside the migration, resident game remains excellent all year, with reliable sightings of prides and cheetah hunting on the open plains.
The reserve is bordered by privately run conservancies such as Olare Motorogi, Naboisho and Mara North. These offer night drives, walking safaris and fewer vehicles at each sighting. The Maasai people live alongside the reserve, and a visit to a Maasai village gives insight into their culture. Hot air balloon flights at sunrise are a popular extra.
July to October for the Great Migration and dry-season game viewing. January to February is also rewarding, with fewer vehicles and good predator sightings. The long rains in April and May bring lush scenery but muddier tracks, and some camps close.
