Elephants & Kilimanjaro

Amboseli

Amboseli National Park sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, and is one of the best places on the continent to see elephants up close. Its herds, led by some of Africa's last great tuskers, wander through marshes fed by underground meltwater, framed by the peak on clear mornings and evenings.

Besides elephants, the park holds buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, lions, cheetah and more than 400 bird species. The flat, open terrain makes wildlife easy to spot, and the park's Observation Hill gives a sweeping view over the swamps and plains.

Amboseli is close to the Maasai communities of the Kajiado region, so cultural visits fit naturally into a stay. It is a rewarding two- or three-night addition to a Masai Mara itinerary.

Highlights

  • Large elephant herds with Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop
  • Open plains that make wildlife easy to see
  • Observation Hill viewpoint over the swamps
  • More than 400 bird species

Best time to visit

June to October and January to February are dry and give the clearest views of Kilimanjaro and the best game viewing. Early mornings usually have the clearest skies. The long rains in April and May bring cloud and muddy tracks.
