Arusha is the safari capital of northern Tanzania. Most itineraries to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara begin here, and Mount Meru rises above the city.
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is about an hour's drive away, and Arusha's smaller airport has scheduled flights to the Serengeti and Zanzibar. Hotels, restaurants and craft markets make it a comfortable place to spend a night before or after a safari.
The city is also a base for Arusha National Park, cultural tours of nearby Maasai and Meru communities and day trips to coffee farms on the slopes of Mount Meru.
Arusha can be visited all year. June to October and January to February are the driest months.
